Some pictures of life at Panat

We build and repair, and we relax at the end of the day:

Orest and Helena repairing a wall. This photo is about 10 years old, but every year we repair a bit of wall here or there!

Orest preparing to hang a shutter. Getting that heavy chestnut shutter up to the 3rd story window took a lot of thought and preparation.

Pat on the terrace ... cleaning up after tea

Orest on the terrace ... during a relaxing aperitif

This is what Orest was smiling at: sunset over the valley, as glimpsed through the vine that shades our terrace.

We often entertain friends and scholars, usually for a lengthy meal with lots of talk and, sometimes, a bit of silliness:

Historian Pierre Goubert with Count d'Adhemar. This photo is a "remembrance of things past" that took place on our terrace.

The ritual photo before the chateau door. D'Adhemar inevitably would insist we climb up to the chateau so our guests could have their picture taken.

Owen and Caroline Hannaway, our colleagues and friends from Baltimore

Pierre Goubert ... playing our cor de chasse

Orest and Francoise Dethan, the widow of Georges Dethan and a frequent visitor to Panat.

Patricia and Catherine Cessac

After-dinner conversations often turn to history, and when we need more information we go to the armoire and consult of mid-18th century volumes of Louis Moreri's Dictionnaire. Still Marc-Antoine Charpentier isn't in Moreri, so what were we checking?

Our granddaughter Helena Franceschi ... who seems to have been charmed by the colorful vegetables.

Helena learns to open a bottle of wine

Kristin Ranum Franceschi and her children ... during a visit to Panat. That was years ago, because Louis is now well over 6'4".

Sylvie Mouysset and Danielle Rives, historians from the nearby Segala highlands, who inevitably bring us baskets and crates of produce and fruit.

Sylvie Mouysset and a pear tart that she and Danielle Rives brought to a "feast" for 4 people!

A round in the "great zucchini competition."

Pierre and Nicole Lancon, librarians in Rodez, are bemused by the zucchinis that Sylvie and Danielle presented us, just to prove that theirs were bigger than ours!

The Aussibals of Panat, celebrating Madame Aussibal's 80th birthday.

... but life is sometimes calm chez nous, and our peasant lady sits calmly in the fireplace
