The Cast of Characters in the Fronde

These files list people mentioned in manuscripts français 25025 and 25026.

In the main the identifications are based upon La Chesnaye des Bois, Père Anselme, the Dictionnaire de Biographie française, and the never-completed edition of Jean Vallier's memoirs.

In fact, since no index exists for Vallier, I included his cast of characters too. (To be specific, the pages where his characters are identified in footnotes.) Sometimes these people are not mentioned in the newsletters prepared by Monsieur X, so you will sometimes be disappointed to discover that a member of Vallier's cast is not an actor in Monsieur X's newsletters.

"JV" followed by numbers (for example, "JV2-113") refers to the volume and page where the person is identified in the Journal de Jean Vallier, maître d'hôtel du roi (1648-1657), ed. H. Couteaut and P. de Vaissiere (Paris: Renouard, 1902-); "TR" refers to a citation in G. Mongrédien's edition of the Historiettes (Paris: Garnier, 1932?); and "Retz" indicates pages where that individual is discussed in Feillet's edition of the Œuvres du cardinal de Retz (Paris: Hachette, 1870).

In the "cast of characters," names beginning with Le or De are listed under the second word that makes up the name. One would therefore look under R for "Le Roy."

We hope that if you use the "Search" engine on this site, and try various permutations of a name, you will be able to locate, in the Fronde newsletters, references to a member of the cast who interests you.
